Frequently asked questions about EXIF data
What is EXIF data?
EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format. Cameras and smartphones store extra details directly inside the image file: camera model, capture date, exposure settings – and, when location services are on, the GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken.
Why should I remove GPS data from photos?
The coordinates are accurate to a few metres and reveal exactly where a photo was taken. With pictures from your home, your workplace or a holiday, that can expose your address or build a movement profile. Many platforms strip the data on upload – but far from all of them, and sending a photo by email or messenger usually keeps it intact.
Is my photo uploaded when I strip the metadata?
No. The image is read and processed entirely inside your browser. It is never sent to a server and never cached. You can even disconnect from the network after the page has loaded – the tool keeps working.
Does the image lose quality?
No. Only the metadata sections are cut out of the file, the actual image data stays byte for byte identical. There is no re-compression – unlike approaches that redraw the picture on a canvas and save it again.
Which file formats are supported?
JPEG and PNG. For JPEG the tool removes EXIF, XMP, IPTC and comment segments, for PNG the tEXt, zTXt and iTXt chunks plus embedded EXIF and timestamp chunks. The colour profile is kept in both cases, so colours do not shift.
Can I stop my phone from writing GPS data?
Yes. On Android, open the camera app settings and turn off "location tags" or "geotagging". On iOS, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → "Never".
